Integrated sets of characterised germplasm

D1.2  Integrated sets of characterised germplasm for strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, currants and blueberry across the climatic zones of the EU as a core collection to be used for breeding programmes

THE EUBerry consortium includes several organisations with active breeding programmes for berry fruits, and work done within WP1 of the project assisted in the evaluation of key germplasm for  continued development by various stakeholder groups.  This deliverable identifies the most appropriate germplasm specifically for use by breeders within the EU, in order to produce the new varieties that will be required to meet the future needs of the berry fruit industry across Europe.

The germplasm identified comprises both existing commercial varieties and also some advanced breeding lines that can be obtained under licence from the owners.

The information for this deliverable is contained in the attached Excel workbook, and it is divided into crop pages.  Additional divisions are made within each page for the various EU cropping regions (southern, central and northern) that are relevant to the particular crop.  The sources of germplasm and contact details are also included in the workbook.

In order to identify the best parents for breeding for specific traits, the following were identified for each crop/region:

Strawberry – yield, cropping season, flowering habit, quality (including nutritional quality), pest and disease resistance.

Raspberry – flowering habit, yield, quality, pest and disease resistance

Blackcurrant – yield, berry size, quality, pest and disease resistance

Blueberry – yield, quality, shelf-life
